Clinical Services
At Stevens, we feel that the problems and needs of specialized populations require separate and distinct curriculums and treatment approaches that address both the treatment needs and safety. Specialization provides an intensive, consistent and concentrated approach, improving the quality of treatment, reducing the length of stay, and creating a physically and emotionally safe environment.
How the Program Works
The treatment approach is designed on a Continuum of Care that includes movement through three levels of treatment:
| • |
Intensive staff-secure treatment, the most structured level, focuses on stabilizing out-of-control emotions or behaviors. |
| • |
Intermediate staff-secure treatment, the focus is on developing the skills necessary to be more responsible and in control of emotions and behaviors. |
| • |
Transitional living, the least restrictive level, where after acquiring the skills necessary to appropriately manage emotions and behaviors, residents can progress into this community setting. |
Clinical services are provided by Masters level clinicians. Therapy is generally cognitive in nature, but can be adjusted to meet the functional needs of the residents.
Following an initial assessment, therapy focuses on problem areas, with the setting of goals and tasks which are evaluated on a weekly basis. Therapy also includes an identification of unique strengths, and the design of the treatment approach builds on these strengths. Clinicians monitor the progress of each goal and provide regular feedback to the youth on their ability to resolve problematic behaviors.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy focuses on understanding the root of problematic behaviors and then working to resolve these underlying issues using a variety of techniques:
| • |
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy |
• |
Evidence-Based Treatment |
| • |
Relapse Prevention Techniques |
• |
Social Skills Development |
| • |
Empathy Development |
• |
Self-Esteem Building |
| • |
Anger Management including anger logs, and journals to help residents identify patterns of negative behavior and ultimately to interrupt these patterns. |
• |
Understanding the Cycle of Inappropriate Behavior |

Family Therapy
Family support and involvement can be an effective motivator making family therapy an important part of treatment. The family is assisted in examining existing family dynamics and strengthening healthy functioning. Sessions begin with a family assessment followed by the development of a family therapy contract. Family sessions generally take place bi-weekly. A parent education workshop is offered to families of residents presenting sexual behavior problems and fire setting.
Other Services
Medication consultations and psychiatric evaluations are provided by our consulting psychiatrist. Psychological testing and evaluations are available through a consulting psychologist. Treatment plan reviews are conducted on a quarterly basis.
Medical services are provided on campus by a registered school nurse. Services obtained from community health care providers are also coordinated by the nurse.
Core Value: A SAFE and caring environment is a necessity for client behavioral change. |
